Browns train with T Cameron Fleming

Two weeks into training camp, the Browns’ starting tackles are still on the active/PUP list. Jedrick Wills And Jack Conklin continue their respective rehab efforts, leaving Cleveland short-staffed at that position.

The team is looking for help here, and Field Yates of ESPN.com noted: Cameron Fleming made a stop in Northeast Ohio for a workout. Fleming has been a free agent since his last contract with the Broncos expired last season. The longtime swing tackle is one of the best options available for the O-line at this point in late summer.

Fleming, 31, spent the last three seasons in Denver. His 2022 proved to be more remarkable than 2023, as the Broncos were Nathaniel HackettSeason compared to Sean Payton‘s debut. Fleming started once last season, but will start 15 times in 2022. Pro Football Focus rated Fleming’s 2022 season positively, particularly in pass protection, and he also started four times for the 2021 Broncos — when their decade-long search for a right tackle was in full swing.

The Browns finished last season without Conklin, Wills or rookie swingman David Jones. Conklin’s injuries (torn ACL and medial ligament) occurred earlier (Week 1) and were more serious than Wills’ medial ligament issue, which occurred several weeks later. However, Wills required surgery. Jones did not begin training camp on the PUP list, which is a positive sign for an injury-plagued offense.

Cleveland is still planning for a fifth season with a Wills-Conklin tackle duo, although there are long-term questions. After Conklin suffered two torn ACLs and a torn patellar tendon as a pro, his plans to participate in camp could not be realized. The former first-round pick’s injury history is certainly concerning at this point, although the Browns did give the veteran a contract extension toward the end of the 2022 season.

No Fleming deal at this point would affect long-term plans; the veteran has played for four teams during his 10-year career. But the Browns have barely a month to get Conklin and Wills ready for the season. That time frame would naturally make the team interested in a deeper backup.
