Bronny James scores 17 points and ends the first preseason with the Lakers with a good result

Bronny James is making history with momentum.

Bronny, the son of one of the greatest NBA players of all time, who will likely become the first father-son duo ever to play in the same game alongside his famous father LeBron James on Tuesday in the Los Angeles Lakers’ season opener, scored a personal best 17 points in the Lakers’ preseason finale on Friday night in San Francisco.

Bronny, 20, the No. 55 pick in the previous draft, started and played 35 minutes in a lopsided 132-74 loss to the Golden State Warriors in which at least seven of the Lakers’ best players, including LeBron, did not start. The game’s leading scorer was another Laker rookie, Quincy Olivari, who scored 22 points, while most of the Warriors’ regular players played at least part of the game, led by Jonathan Kuminga with 17 points. Steph Curry (sprained finger) did not play.

Covering both the Lakers’ preseason and NBA Summer League lineup from a few months ago, Bronny posted his best offensive game as a pro to date with 17 points on 7-of-17 shooting. He had only scored eight points in the entire preseason on Friday.

“It’s just a great feeling to go out and not think as much as I did and just play,” Bronny told ESPN after the game. “(I have) just a little bit of confidence going into the season, even though I might not be in that rotation, maybe not playing, just going to practice, maybe G League games with the confidence to go out there and play my game. I feel like that’s the biggest part of it.”

What counts, however, is whatever happens on Tuesday when the Lakers host the Minnesota Timberwolves to open the season.

Bronny and LeBron already made history when they played together in the same preseason contest on October 6th. No father and son have ever played in the same NBA regular-season game before, let alone on the same team, but the Lakers are widely expected to make that happen Tuesday against Minnesota.

The Lakers play an early road game on Oct. 30 in Cleveland, where Bronny lived at two different times during his childhood. Bronny signed a four-year, $7.9 million contract with more money and guarantees than is normally given to a selected player so close to the end of the draft.

“I think for him and all of our younger players, all moments are building blocks,” Lakers coach JJ Redick said, according to ESPN. “Not just the good moments. The bad moments are learning opportunities. I think you have to have a certain amount of patience and optimism. I am very confident about the work of our young people.

“So I think it was a good feeling for him to have 17 points for sure. …I’m not worried about that at all. It’s not even on my radar. For example, we’re trying to help him develop into a great basketball player.”
