Brest and Leverkusen’s perfect starts end in a draw

Brest and Bayer Leverkusen’s perfect start in the Champions League ended with a 1-1 draw in Guingamp.

Florian Wirtz scored the opening goal for Leverkusen in the 24th minute after being passed through by Jonas Hofmann.

The German striker would have scored a second just moments later as he marched past four Brest defenders before his shot was stopped by Bizot.

Thanks to Pierre Lees-Melou’s excellent volley, Brest went into the break level.

Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso was furious and was shown a yellow card after the final whistle for protesting against the referee’s decision not to award his team a penalty in the final minute of regular time.

Both referee Ivan Kruzliak and the video assistant referee ruled that Brest defender Soumaila Coulibaly had touched the ball before bringing down Hofmann in the penalty area.

The result gives seven points to both clubs, who won their first two games.

Brest, playing in their first Champions League season, started the second half strongly, with both Lees-Melou and Kenny Lala sending their attempts just wide, while it took Bizot to direct Mahdi Camara’s shot over the bar .

However, the reigning Bundesliga champions grew back into the game and Massadio Haidara was lucky not to turn a low cross from Wirtz into his own net.

The visitors had an earlier penalty appeal dismissed as Lees-Melou’s arm appeared to be in a natural position when it was hit by the ball.
