Brazil 4-0 Peru (October 15, 2024) Match analysis

Raphinha scored a penalty in each half to lead an improved Brazil to a 4-0 home win over Peru in South American World Cup qualifiers on Tuesday.

Building on last week’s 2-1 comeback win in Chile, Brazil looked lively from the start and dominated possession, with late goals from Andreas Pereira and Luiz Henrique adding shine to an impressive performance.

Brazil, which had lost four of five qualifying games before its win in Chile on Thursday, sits fourth in the table with 16 points after 10 games, trailing third-placed Uruguay on goal difference.

“I think we needed that. It was really important to win both games to get back on track,” Raphinha told Brazilian TV Globo.

“There were two games that we were able to control. It’s far from perfect, but I think we’re on the right track.”

After hitting the crossbar in the 24th minute, Raphinha gave the home team the lead with a penalty in the 38th minute after Peruvian defender Carlos Zambrano was penalized for a handball.

The Barcelona striker extended Brazil’s lead with a penalty in the 54th minute after Zambrano fouled Savinho in the penalty area.

Substitute Pereira scored Brazil’s third goal in the 72nd minute with an acrobatic volley, brilliantly finishing off a cross from Luiz Henrique, who sealed the win two minutes later with a low shot from the edge of the box.

Argentina defeated Bolivia 6-0 and leads the table with 22 points, three points ahead of Colombia, which beat bottom-placed Chile 4-0.

Davinson Sanchez opened the scoring for Colombia with a deflected header in the 34th minute and Luis Diaz doubled the lead early in the second half with a simple finish into an empty net after the visitors’ defense made a serious mistake.

Jhon Duran and Luis Sinisterra secured the win as Chile suffered a fifth consecutive defeat in qualifying.

Paraguay beat Venezuela 2-1 and is in sixth place with 13 points, level with fifth-place Ecuador and one ahead of seventh-place Bolivia. The top six teams are guaranteed a spot in the 2026 North American finals.
