Brave NBA superstar could give up baskets for NFL dreams: ‘I’m going to play football’

NFL Hall of Fame defensive back Deion Sanders did it. So did Bo Jackson, who was on his way to a Hall of Fame career with the Kansas City Royals before a serious hip injury ended his career.

Not to mention Michael Jordan, the greatest hooper of all time and the inspiration behind the acronym “GOAT.”

Some of the world’s best athletes have competed professionally in more than one sport in the past, proving that their talent extends beyond sport in general.

Minnesota Timberwolves forward Anthony Edwards won a gold medal at the Paris Olympics this summer and shot up the NBA’s list of top talent. However, Edwards may choose a new sport, he revealed during a shoot for the ESPN cover story:

“Football players can’t play basketball,” Edwards said. “No way. I told myself, friends. I said, ‘If I win a ring in the next three to four years, I’m going to play football.’

Edwards, the first overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, could be on the right track.

Because of the skills required to play any sport, an NBA player is more likely to be able to stay in the NFL than the other way around. In general, the practice and repetition work required in basketball exceeds the physical adaptation required in football, but that doesn’t make the task much easier.

Edwards is brash and talented. He also appeared on the gridiron over a decade ago at the age of 11. But that doesn’t mean he’s trading the NBA’s big, guaranteed contracts and league dibs for the more damaging world of the NFL.
