A local high school coach sold Tom Brady trading cards at a sports memorabilia event in New York, Providence Place Mall celebrated its 25th anniversary, and – in case you missed it – a couple got married in a hospital hours before the bride’s father passed away.

Hundreds come to the National Night Out event at Rocky Point Park in Warwick

Last Saturday, hundreds gathered at Rocky Point Park for the annual National Night Out, a community-led campaign aimed at strengthening police-neighborhood relations.

This year’s event marks the 41st year of the campaign.

Since its inception, organizers have said their mission has reached more than 38 million residents in 17,000 communities across the country.

Tom Brady buys trading cards from basketball coach from Burrillville

Kevin Randall, head coach of the Burrillville High School basketball team, sold five Tom Brady trading cards at a sports memorabilia event in New York last week.

“He immediately looked at the autograph of himself and Joe Montana, his childhood hero. He bought one of them from me and my friend Chris,” Randall said of the legendary quarterback.

Randall said his investment in Brady cards over the years has enabled the coach to buy a new home and spend more time with his family.

“Never before this weekend or any show would I have thought that something like this would happen, so it’s a pretty incredible story,” he said.

Man allegedly attempted to take 9 pounds of marijuana on a flight from TF Green Airport

Rhode Island State Police arrested a South Carolina man on Monday for allegedly attempting to depart TF Green International Airport with 9 pounds of marijuana in his checked baggage.

Police arrested 25-year-old James Perry after he was detained by airport police when the marijuana shipment destined for a Breeze Airlines flight was discovered.

State police charged Perry with intentional trafficking of marijuana and possession of marijuana.

Providence Place celebrates 25 years as a downtown landmark

Providence Place opened 25 years ago Tuesday, but the idea for the mall dates back more than a decade to its opening on August 20, 1999.

The architecture of the mall was intended to fit into Providence’s historic past through the use of bricks and windows on the facade.

Providence Place remains a vibrant part of the Rhode Island community and a center of activity in the downtown area.

Bride and groom marry in hospital to fulfill their dying father’s wish

A bride and groom were married at Fatima Hospital on Monday, just an hour before the bride’s father took his last breath.

Sabrina Silveira-DaCosta said her father, Frank Silveira, was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy at least 10 years ago, but his health has recently deteriorated rapidly.

The family changed the wedding date from September 7 to August 19, and Frank died about an hour after he “walked her down the aisle.”

The bride and groom said Frank will be there in spirit at their wedding on September 7.
