A boy was killed and a man was injured in an overnight shooting at a park in unincorporated Adams County on Saturday, according to the Adams County Sheriff’s Office.

The shooting occurred at Rotella Park, a sprawling park in Adams County near a residential development in the Welby/Coronado neighborhood south of Thornton, near Coronado Parkway South and York Street.

An Adams County sheriff’s deputy told the Denver Gazette that shots were fired at a group of seven teenagers in the park. It was not immediately clear what led to the shooting.

The boy who was shot received life-saving measures at the scene of the accident and soon died, the deputy spokesman said. His name and age will be released by the Adams County Coroner’s Office.

A man was also shot in the leg during the incident. Officers said he passed by as a spectator. His condition has not been released.

Officers said Sunday the investigation into the shooting was ongoing, but they completed their work at the scene at 12:30 p.m. and families were seen at the park, which has a playground, a beach volleyball court and at least a half-dozen others Picnic huts provided for players.

Officials said they were interviewing family members and witnesses. No arrests have been made, deputies said.

The sheriff’s office asks anyone with information about the shooting to call 303-288-1535.
