Boston smoke smell emanating from wildfires in Salem, Massachusetts

SALEM – Bushfires Burning continued Monday in Salem and other parts of northeastern Massachusetts, with smoke detected as far away as Boston.

In Salem, about 130 hectares of land burned in the wildfires that began on Saturday. The fires have spread as tourists gather for Halloween events in downtown Salem this week.

The fires had no impact on the celebrations, but the drifting smoke from the north coast could be smelled for miles.

Smell of brush fire smoke

The National Weather Service in Boston asked its followers on social media in southern New England Monday morning: “Are you waking up to the smell of smoke this morning, SNE?”

“A surface inversion is holding this smoke near the ground, but the smoke should ‘mix’ later in the morning,” the agency said.

The National Weather Service warned that the combination of “recent dry weather and very dry soil will continue to create favorable conditions for wildfire development.”

“Throughout the night and early morning, fire departments in our area responded to multiple ‘smell of smoke’ calls due to smoke from wildfires in the North Shore area, Salem, Saugus, Lynn, Peabody, etc,” the Cambridge Fire Department tweeted Monday morning .

Cambridge and Boston are about 20 miles south of Salem.

Salem, Peabody, Lynn bushfires

Salem Fire Chief Alan Dionne said the flames were very difficult to put out because the terrain between Salem, Peabody and Lynn was very remote and rocky.

Several local and state agencies are now using water drops from helicopters and drones to identify areas of severe fires and extinguish the flames.

“It’s a big area and it’s the hardest place to get to,” Dionne told WBZ-TV on Sunday. “It’s just one of those fires that’s going to smolder for a long time. And if it smolders overnight and then in the morning you get fresh air and a breeze and especially if the wind changes, then it could flare up again.”

Bushfires in Middleton

No one was injured and there are no reports of homes or businesses being damaged by the fires, which are also a problem in Middleton, about 10 miles northwest of Salem.

“Both incidents require lengthy, highly committed, multi-agency operations to bring under control,” Northeast Massachusetts Emergency Alerts said in a statement on Facebook.

On Sunday, bushfires were reported as far away as Rehoboth. A firefighter there was taken to the hospital because of the heat but is expected to recover, according to WPRI-TV.
