“Borderlands” is not the worst film of the year, even if the Internet wants you to believe otherwise

Before attending a premiere of Borderlands last Friday (August 9), I braced myself for the worst. At the time, the film had a disastrous 6% on Rotten Tomatoes (it’s since dropped to a staggering 9%) and my colleague had just given it a one-star rating in our Borderlands review. My expectations were at rock bottom when the lights dimmed and the film began…

102 minutes later, I left the theater, bleary-eyed, thinking to myself, “Is that all?” Yes, Borderlands is a bad movie and will probably end up somewhere in my top 10 least favorite movies of the year come December, but it’s certainly not the worst movie I’ve seen in the last eight months (and I’ve seen 56 of them in theaters so far). For me, the criticism and criticism the film has received over the weekend and this week is extremely harsh.
