BOISE, Idaho – Boise State University has accepted a formal invitation and received unanimous approval from the conference’s board of directors to join the Pac-12 Conference, the university and conference announced Thursday.

The Broncos will join the Pac-12 Conference effective July 1, 2026, pending approval of the full agreement by the Idaho State Board of Education. Boise State will join the redesigned conference with incumbent members Oregon State and Washington State, as well as Colorado State, Fresno State and San Diego State. Competition for all conference sports will begin in the 2026-27 academic year.

“Boise State University has excelled in all areas by which we are measured, from the laboratory to the classroom to the playing field. We have broken records in research awards, graduation rates and philanthropic giving. Our exciting development is underscored by the performance of our renowned athletic programs are making the moment right for advancement to the Pac-12 Conference,” said Dr. Marlene Tromp, Boise State President.

“What a great day to be a Bronco!” said Boise State Athletic Director Jeramiah Dickey. “I want to thank Dr. Tromp, our legal department and the many members of our state board, university and athletic leadership who contributed to this process. We evaluated this move from many angles and considered it with our heads and hearts and most importantly with our 350+ student-athletes in mind. When it came to the final decision, we chose this path because it puts Boise State in the best position for success and is in the best interest of this university and community. From storytelling opportunities with Pac-12 Enterprises to recruiting and revenue opportunities, we believe this best aligns with our department’s goal of elevating its national reputation through competitive excellence and moves us aggressively toward ‘What’s Next.’ We will never stop!”

Pac-12 Commissioner Teresa Gould and the conference’s board of directors strategically evaluated each university’s applications based on five prioritized metrics and established criteria, which included academic and athletic performance, media and brand evaluation, commitment to athletic success, geography and logistics, culture and student-athlete welfare.
