Boeing workers face uncertainty amid looming layoffs

Thousands of Boeing workers are starting the workweek uncertain about their job security after the company announced plans to cut 10% of its workforce.

The announcement comes as contract negotiations between Boeing and the union representing 33,000 striking machinists remain stalled despite mediation efforts.

The machinists, who have been on strike for more than a month, are already facing significant challenges, including loss of company health insurance and missing paychecks.

There is now a risk of the possible destruction of thousands of jobs.

On Friday, Boeing announced that about 17,000 jobs will be affected by the layoffs, affecting executives, managers and workers alike. The company also plans to end production of the 767 freighter in Everett.

Boeing’s CEO said the company has suffered $25 billion in losses since 2019 as it grappled with safety issues, whistleblower reports and intense scrutiny of company culture in congressional hearings.

Many workers on the picket line expressed frustration and uncertainty about the future.

“I think they are playing a game,” said one worker. “It’s a cat and mouse game. They don’t do what they need to do.”

Boeing declined to provide specific information about the timing and location of the upcoming job cuts.
