Body of 33-year-old woman found after flash flood near Grand Canyon

The body of a woman who had been missing for three days was discovered Sunday after she was swept away by a flash flood near Arizona’s Grand Canyon that required the rescue of more than 100 people, officials said.

The body of 33-year-old Chenoa Nickerson was discovered during a commercial river cruise on the Colorado River about 20 miles downstream from where she disappeared Thursday, the U.S. National Park Service said in a statement.

Nickerson, of Gilbert, a suburb of Phoenix, was swept into Havasu Creek without a life jacket, the park service said.

Havasu Creek is a tributary of the Colorado River that joins the larger waterway just before it reaches Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona.

The search by air, ground and rescue vehicles was focused on the confluence of Havasu Creek and the Colorado River, the park service said.

The creek also flows through Havasupai tribal land, where tribal leaders have asked Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs for flood assistance, the governor’s office said in a statement.

The state has provided resources, including a UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter to assist with evacuations and a deployment of the National Guard, the statement said.

The Arizona National Guard said Saturday that the Blackhawk helped evacuate 104 tourists and tribal members from a ravine.

The Havasupai Tribal Council announced Saturday that its lands would be closed to tourists until further notice due to severe flooding.
