Jay Johnston, the actor whose credits include the animated series Bob’s Burgers and the cinema comedy Moderatorwas sentenced to one year and one day in federal prison for his role in the mob attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.

Johnston, 56, was arrested by the FBI in June after being identified from footage of other rioters and pleaded guilty in July to interfering with police officers on the day of the riot. He faced up to five years in prison.

At Monday’s sentencing, he expressed regret that he had “made it harder for police to do their jobs” and said he never thought a riot would occur, according to the Associated Press. “It was due to my own ignorance,” he added. Johnston will report to prison at a date to be determined.

Prosecutors had recommended an 18-month prison sentence, in part because Johnson “made light of his participation in the insurrection,” according to a sentencing memorandum that included a photo of him dressed as Jacob Chansley, the rioter of the Capitol known as the “QAnon Shaman,” at a 2022 Halloween party.

Prosecutors alleged that Johnston not only took part in one of the day’s most violent attacks on police officers in the Lower West Plaza, but also filmed the events on his cellphone. After being handed a stolen U.S. Capitol Police riot shield, prosecutors said Johnston helped create a “protective wall” that forced officers to retreat into a tunnel.

Videos taken by Johnston on the day of the attack, which were later played in court, showed the actor using a metal bike rack to climb a wall, using a Donald Trump billboard as a blunt shield against police officers and joking about it his fellow rioters attacked the wall police.

Prosecutors wrote that Johnston “was active in the days following the 6th and participated in the violence used by the rioters that day.”

Numerous people died in connection with the attack on the Capitol, including rioter Ashli ​​Babbit, who was shot by a police officer. Officer Brian D. Sicknick died of multiple strokes a day after the mob attack, and four other officers died by suicide in the months following the attack.

Johnston is best known for voicing Jimmy Pesto Sr Bob’s Burgers. His other film appearances include the TV series Captured development And The Sarah Silverman ShowIn both roles he played a police officer.
