Bob Iger gives insight into the films “The Mandalorian” and “The Incredibles 3” on D23

At Disney’s biannual D23 event this weekend, CEO Bob Iger announced the return of popular characters from “The Mandalorian” and “Toy Story” in new films and shows from the entertainment giant.

The event, which runs through August 11 in Anaheim, California – home of Disneyland Park – highlights the projects Disney is working on in its animation studios and theme parks around the world.

In recent years, the D23 exhibition has unveiled new trailers and offered previews of new attractions, including live-action series for Disney+ and new projects from Pixar Animation Studios.

“It is a great privilege for me to lead such a remarkable company that brings joy to so many people around the world – both the young and, as Walt liked to say, the young at heart,” Iger said Friday night at the opening of the Disney Entertainment Showcase. “We have much to be proud of and even more to look forward to.”

Among the projects Disney unveiled at this year’s event was a trailer for an upcoming film set in the Star Wars universe, The Mandalorian and Grogu, directed by Jon Favreau. The film, starring Pedro Pascal, is scheduled to be released on May 22, 2026, and is currently in production.

The expo also featured a screening of Moana 2, which will be released on November 27th of this year. The film will see the return of Auli’i Cravalho, the voice of Moana, and Dwyane “The Rock” Johnson will play Maui. It will also feature new characters such as Moana’s little sister Simea.

The studio also announced that it is working on sequels to the “Toy Story” and “The Incredibles” franchises. “Toy Story 5” will hit theaters on June 19, 2026, but there is no release date yet for “The Incredibles 3.”

But Disney didn’t give up. The company also announced release dates for “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” the latest installment in James Cameron’s series about the alien Na’vi race, which will be released next year, as well as concept art for “Frozen 3,” which will hit theaters in 2027.

The presentation concluded with a new trailer for the photorealistic animated film “Mufasa: The Lion King,” which will be released in cinemas in December.

“Our deep connection with fans, forged over a century of storytelling, is stronger today than ever before – driven by the unmatched power of our creative studios, the broad appeal of our brands and franchises, and the innovative ways we bring our stories to life in our theme parks and experiences,” Iger said in his opening remarks on Friday.

He added that the world needs entertainment – perhaps now more than ever – and that the company takes that responsibility “seriously.”

“We are grateful for every moment, every memory we get to be a part of,” Iger said. “And we are grateful to you for caring so much about the things we create and for inviting Disney into your lives in such a profound way.”

Disney representatives referred Business Insider to a press release about the event, but did not respond to questions about the release date of “Incredibles 3” and other newly announced projects.
