Blake Lively film “It Ends With Us” banned in Qatar because of kissing scenes

It ends with Qatar.

Blake Lively’s new romantic drama “It Ends With Us” is said to have been banned from cinemas in Qatar because of the kissing scenes.

According to Deadline and Variety, the country’s censorship committee – which has the final say on what plays in Qatari cinemas – was behind the decision to block the PG-13 film.

Based on the popular novel of the same name by Colleen Hoover, “It Ends With Us” is about domestic violence and one woman’s struggle to leave a toxic relationship.

Directed by Justin Baldoni, the film contains several kissing scenes and non-explicit sex scenes in which the characters wear underwear.

Located on the northeast coast of the Arabian Peninsula in the Middle East, Qatar has a long tradition of banning Hollywood films from its cinemas.

Other recent PG-13 releases banned from screening in Qatar include Greta Gerwig’s feminist film “Barbie,” the animated adventure “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” and two Marvel projects, “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” and “Eternals.”

Not surprisingly, there are many films rated R that, for predictable reasons, also did not receive the approval of the censorship board.

There was a naked Jennifer Lawrence in “No Hard Feelings”; there was a same-sex kiss in the Buzz Lightyear/“Toy Story” spinoff “Lightyear”; there was an implication in the Pixar film “Onward” that one of its characters was a lesbian; and the steamy romance between Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney in “Anyone but You” was, well, a steamy romance.

The censorship committee has not only banned the screening of certain films in Qatar, but has also asked filmmakers to make changes to their films in order to obtain approval.

Disney balked at the requested cuts in Steven Spielberg’s 2021 remake of “West Side Story,” which involved the character Anybody, who is portrayed as transgender and played by nonbinary actress Iris Menas.

Censorship issues aside, the It Ends With Us team will not be mourning any lost profits from Qatar.

The female-focused flick surprised Hollywood after grossing a whopping $7 million in its preview on Thursday, beating industry forecasts.

Now Star Lively could be facing a box office duel with her husband Ryan Reynolds and his Marvel film “Deadpool & Wolverine.”

As of midday Friday, August 9, Reynolds’ reprise of the red-suited Deadpool is expected to bring in $53 million in its third weekend. Meanwhile, It Ends With Us is eyeing an opening weekend in the mid-$40 million range. Still, speculation is mounting that estimates for It Ends With Us are low, a view backed up by Thursday’s preview numbers.

It Ends With Us’ opening weekend numbers could also be boosted by interest in the growing controversy surrounding the film.

According to multiple sources who spoke to Page Six, Lively and director Baldoni clashed on the set of the film. Baldoni created an “extremely difficult” atmosphere for the entire cast, one insider claimed, and another claimed Baldoni made Lively feel “uncomfortable” about her post-baby body.

The actress entered the film shortly after the birth of her son Olin, her fourth child with Reynolds.

At the film’s premiere on Thursday, August 8, Lively and Baldoni appeared to avoid each other. The couple also did not do any joint publicity.

Many online are already calling “It Ends With Us” the next “Don’t Worry, Darling,” the 2022 film directed by Olivia Wilde and starring Harry Styles, Florence Pugh, Chris Pine and Wilde.

The press tour for this film was closely followed by eagle-eyed social media detectives who analyzed every on-camera moment, every social media comment, and every post for clues to the alleged rift that was taking place between the cast and the director.

When asked if the controversy contributed to the film’s higher ticket sales, some answered “yes,” others answered “no.”

Regardless, It Ends With Us looks set to be a box office success, whether there is controversy or not.
