“Bizarre and more than confusing”

A concerned Reddit user asked online for advice on how to help a historic tree that was destroyed in the area.

On the r/Austin subreddit, they posted a picture of the Treaty Oak, a famous local landmark that Famous Trees of Texas says is over 500 years old, with a large chunk of bark torn out.

"Your best bet is to notify the Austin Parks and Recreation Department so a plan can be made to give the tree the care it needs now."

“Does anyone know who can help the Treaty Oak?” was the post’s caption. “Last night someone took an axe to the Treaty Oak and a piece is missing. The tree has been through a lot and apparently has its own wiki.”

According to the Austin American-Statesman, the tree was actually in danger in 1989 when a convicted felon tried to poison it. In 1937, it even got lucky when its owner threatened to remove it until conservationists stepped in. The city of Austin eventually purchased the tree and declared the area a city park, as the website Famous Trees of Texas details.

Unfortunately, it appears that someone else has attempted to harm the tree. Removing the bark exposes the tree’s tissues to bacteria, fungi and pests, which can lead to disease or even death.

If the cut extends to the xylem and phloem, it can interfere with the transport of vital nutrients, sugars and water that keep the tree alive, explains Tutoroot.

In this case, it appears that someone has taken a rounded log from the bark of the tree. However, similar damage can also be caused by carving names, initials or symbols into the bark, which is unfortunately a common practice.

According to the Austin American-Statesman, an investigation into the vandalism of a tree “considered sacred by the Tonkawa and Comanche peoples” was closed in March 2024 due to a lack of leads.

In addition to being culturally and historically important, the tree absorbs and stores harmful air pollutants, helping to improve air quality and reduce the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. It also provides natural shade and cooling and provides habitat for numerous creatures important to biodiversity.

Reddit users shared their thoughts on how the local historic landmark could be saved.

“An experienced arborist needs to be called in,” one user said. “This will require more than DIY work. You should probably notify Austin Parks and Recreation so a plan can be put in place to give the tree the care it needs now.”

“This is bizarre and completely insane,” said another user.

Fortunately, the tree soon received the attention it deserved.

“I work nearby,” said another Redditor. “The city has been working on the tree all day.”
