Bissouma passes the first test of redemption, but Ange wants more

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou says it will take more than Yves Bissouma’s stunning opening goal to force redemption after being caught consuming laughing gas.

The 27-year-old scored his first goal for Spurs in 56 games in the 14th minute, opening the scoring after missing the first game of the season due to an internal suspension.

The Australian praised the Malian for starting his redemption story, but said: “It is a good start.

“He still has work to do. I have no doubts about his footballing qualities. We want to make him the best version of himself. That starts both off and on the pitch.”

He added: “We know Biss is a good footballer. It’s about him being the best version of himself and he will only achieve that if – as we’ve talked about a few times – discipline is a big thing for him and I thought he showed a disciplined performance today, you know.”

“Not only did he score the goal, he also performed a really important task for us.

“He knew they were going to play pretty direct and he had to be there to get second balls and intercept things and he was clean in possession most of the time. So a good performance.”

Postecoglou also said that goals could soon become part of Bissouma’s game, adding: “Yes, that was it (a killer finish). No, I’m not surprised because, as I said, there’s no doubt about his ability, you know. He has the ability to do something special.”

“But you know, he has to make sure he does everything, like I said. He tries and strives to do everything right on and off the field to give him the platform to show what kind of footballer he could be.”

“We definitely believe in him, we definitely give him a chance. But as I said before the game, it’s not an endless thread, at some point you have to cut it. And it’s really up to him to move on.”
