Biles and US women, Oka and Japanese win most gold medals in Paris

In the women’s competition, the US team and Simone Biles won the most medals in gymnastics at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, while Japan and Oka Shinnosuke did that in the men’s area.

At the conclusion of the gymnastics competition on August 5, Simone Biles of the USA went home with three gold medals and one silver medal, while the US women’s team took home eight medals in total (three gold, one silver and four bronze). The USA won the team title, and Biles took the all-around and vault titles, as well as a silver medal on floor exercise.

The other medalists for the USA were also Tokyo all-around champions Suni Lee who won the bronze medal in the all-around and on the uneven bars, Jade CareyOlympic champion in Tokyo on the floor, won the bronze medal on the vault in Paris, while Jordanian chilis won bronze on floor.

“I just couldn’t believe I did it. I know I did it, but I don’t think I’ve realized it yet. I’ll probably realize it every time I get back to the Village,” Biles said after winning the gold medal in the all-around, her second after her victory in Rio 2016.

“I’m just thrilled with my performance tonight,” she added.

Biles will leave Paris with a total of eleven Olympic medals (five in Rio, two in Tokyo and four in Paris), which is the second highest total. Vera Kaslavaska from Czechoslovakia only behind Larisa Latynina the Soviet Union with 18.

Rebecca Andrade from Brazil was the second most successful gymnast in Paris after Biles and also won four medals. Andrade defeated Biles on the floor and took the gold medal, and in the all-around and on the vault she took silver behind the American.

“I am very happy and proud of what I have achieved. We came here every day to compete and perform. Gymnastics is not an easy sport, it demands a lot from our bodies and minds.”

“I was confident that I could handle all the pressure and I worked with my coach to achieve what we did,” she said.

Andrade also led Brazil to its first ever team medal. “Our bronze medal in the team event was very important to me. It was something we dreamed of as a team and something I really wanted for myself,” said Andrade.

Shinnosuke Oka (JPN)

In the men’s competition, Japan’s Oka Shinnosuke won four medals, including three gold medals. This makes him the winner of the most individual medals in the men’s field. As an individual competitor, Oka was crowned all-around champion and won the title on the high bar and a bronze medal on the parallel bars. “I didn’t really expect to win a gold medal on the high bar. I didn’t make any mistakes today and I’m very happy with my routine,” he said after winning gold on the high bar.

Oka was also part of the Japanese team that won gold. It was his first gold medal at these Olympics. “My favorite is obviously the gold medal in the team final because we worked so hard for it. It’s a collective result,” he said. “After the team final, the pressure was off my shoulders. I was just able to perform with less pressure. I’m happy that I did so well.”

The Chinese men won the most medals in Paris, but not the most gold. Liu Yang And Zou Jingyuan repeated their gold medals as they successfully defended their titles on rings and parallel bars. Both were the only gymnasts in the entire field to defend their gold medal from Tokyo. In addition, the Chinese men won silver in the all-around Zhang BohengRings Zou Jingyuan, and team, and two bronze medals: Allround Xiao Ruoteng and horizontal bar Zhang Boheng, making a total of seven medals.

Overall, the US team won the most medals with a total of ten (three gold, one silver and six bronze). Japan and the USA were tied for gold medals with three each.
