Big Meech, founder of the Black Mafia Family, released from prison

Demetrius “Big Meech” Flenory of the infamous Black Mafia Family is getting closer to freedom as he has been moved to serve the remainder of his sentence outside of a cell.

Complex has confirmed that Flenory was transferred from the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) Coleman Low to community custody, which is overseen by the Federal Bureau of Prisons’ Miami Residential Reentry Management (RRM) Office. That means Flenory will either be in home isolation or in a Residential Reentry Center, also known as a “halfway house.” Flenory was transferred on October 15, 2024.

According to legal documents on the Federal Bureau of Prisons website, Flenory is expected to be released on January 27, 2026. In a statement to TMZ, Flenory’s attorney, Brittany K. Barnett, said she was “overjoyed” at the news of his release, claiming he had used his time in prison to focus on his personal growth and that the door was open for him It’s wide open to start a new chapter in his life.

“Two decades is an incredibly long time and it has been inspiring to witness the power of hope and resilience,” Barnett told Complex in a statement. “He used his time in prison to focus on personal growth and transformation, and now he has the opportunity to start a new chapter.”

Barnett continued: “He’s out but millions more remain trapped in prison – there’s still so much to do. We must push for real change, for a justice system that recognizes the dignity and potential for redemption in every individual. Our commitment to this.” The fight against the injustices that still exist in the criminal justice system remains steadfast. There is nothing more urgent than freedom.

Flenory was initially arrested in 2005 and later sentenced to 30 years in prison in 2008 after being convicted of drug trafficking and money laundering through his BMF organization. Earlier this year, Barnett was able to get a 32-month suspension of his prison sentence.

Big Meech and his brother Terry Lee “Southwest Tee” Flenory founded BMF in 1985 as a creative agency and hip-hop label. However, federal agents suspected that the brothers were up to no good and were using their company as a front for money laundering. BMF reportedly generated over $270 million in cocaine sales in the United States.
