Ben Johnson Isn’t Worried About Filming Trick Games: ‘The Well Runs Deep’

In the Lions’ 47-9 win over the Cowboys last week, it seemed like they were emptying their bag of tricks on offense.

But speaking to the media on Thursday, offensive coordinator Ben Johnson said he wasn’t worried about Detroit now having so much caught on tape for others to see.

“Yes, this game has been around for a long time and our challenge as a coaching staff – and I tell the offensive staff quite a lot – is that we can run a million different types of plays and for that reason I can’t say ‘I like.’ “Don’t do the same thing twice,” Johnson said in his press conference. “I don’t like doing it within a game, I don’t like doing it within a season. We certainly have some staples that I’ll repeat from time to time, but we need to show a little creativity. Defenses, they do their film study, they look at things, they figure out, “Hey, out of this formation, they do this, that, and the other thing.” And we try to mix it up.

“So in that regard, I’m not worried about putting things on tape. If anything, it will only help prepare for the next thing in the future, and yes, the well is deep as far as thoughts go.”

Johnson pointed out that pulling off these types of trick plays takes a lot of preparation, with details going back to spring and training camp. To that end, Johnson noted that coaches can be “very demanding” of players.

“We don’t just call plays plays because we think they look cool,” Johnson said. “It’s really intentional and intentional, and then our guys carry it the rest of the way.”

They may not use them this week, but Johnson said the Lions can use a lot more trick plays this season.

“Oh yeah,” Johnson said. “Every week we replenish our supplies and that has remained consistent. It just so happened last week that we wanted to unload them.”
