“Beetlejuice” is back at number 1; conservative documentary “Am I Racist” cracks the top 5 of the cinema charts

Moviegoers said yes to more “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” this weekend.

After its grand opening, Tim Burton’s sequel effortlessly conquered the domestic box office charts again with $51.6 million in ticket sales, the studio estimated on Sunday. The North American gross of the Warner Bros. release is only 54% below the previous week’s figure and already stands at $188 million. Internationally, $28.7 million was added, bringing the total worldwide revenue to a staggering $264.3 million.

“A drop of just 54% is really impressive and indicates pretty solid word of mouth,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore. “Audiences are enjoying the film.”

Although “Beetlejuice” had a strong impact, there was little major new competition. New offerings included James McAvoy’s horror film “Speak No Evil,” a satirical documentary about right-wing podcaster Matt Walsh, and a new action film from Dave Bautista, “The Killer’s Game.”

Taking second place in weekend ticket sales was “Speak No Evil,” a remake of a 2022 Danish horror film about an unsuspecting family who decide to spend a weekend in the countryside with new friends. McAvoy stars in it alongside Mackenzie Davis and Scoot McNairy. With positive reviews and a smart Friday the 13th release date, the Blumhouse production, released by Universal Pictures, grossed an estimated $11.5 million from 3,375 locations.

” Dead Pool and “Wolverine” landed in third place in its eighth weekend with another $5.2 million. The Disney and Marvel blockbuster now stands at $621.5 million in North America and $1.3 billion worldwide.

The Daily Wire film Am I a Racist? landed at number four on the box office charts with an estimated $4.7 million from just 1,517 theaters. Described as a mockumentary in the style of Borat, the film follows conservative columnist Walsh who goes undercover as a “DEI intern.” Walsh also attempted to examine gender ideologies in the 2022 film What is a Woman? Both films were directed by Justin Folk.

Am I a Racist? reportedly cost $3 million to produce. For the release, Daily Wire – the company co-founded by Ben Shapiro – partnered with SDG Releasing, a distribution company founded by God’s Not Dead writers Cary Solomon and Chuck Konzelman that promises the “lowest fees in the industry.” Among the trailers shown ahead of Am I a Racist? is another film aimed at a conservative audience: Dinesh D’Souza’s upcoming film Vindicating Trump.

Rounding out the top five was “Reagan,” the Showbiz Direct release starring Dennis Quaid as the former president, which earned another $3 million in its third weekend, bringing its domestic total to $23.3 million.

“The Killer’s Game” came in sixth with $2.6 million. In the action comedy, Bautista plays a terminally ill hitman who received poor reviews. The religiously motivated film “God’s Not Dead: In God We Trust” also made it into the top 10 with a $1.5 million opening.

In limited release, Amazon MGM Studios kicked off its Sundance hit film My Old Ass, starring Maisy Stella, in seven theaters in New York, Los Angeles and Austin, where it grossed a total of $171,242. The coming-of-age film hits theaters nationwide on September 27.

Next weekend, the Optimus Prime origin film “Transformers One” will be in theaters, but until “Joker: Folie à Deux” hits the screen on October 4, it will probably be a quiet few weeks at the box office.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday in U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore. Final domestic numbers will be released Monday.
