Beckerman is inducted into the Utah Sports Hall of Fame

SALT LAKE CITY — Head coach of the Utah Valley men’s soccer team and Real Salt Lake legend Kyle Beckerman is inducted into the Utah Sports Hall of Fame.

Beckerman will be honored at the Utah Sports Hall of Fame Foundation’s annual banquet on Sept. 9 at the Little America Hotel in Salt Lake City. Beckerman will be the second RSL player inducted into the USHOF, joining longtime teammate Nick Rimando, who was inducted in 2021.

Beckerman retired in December 2020 after a highly successful 21-year professional and international career. He spent 14 of those seasons in Utah with RSL, where he captained and led the team to the 2009 MLS Cup. He also earned 58 caps as a member of the U.S. national team, including starting lineups at the 2014 World Cup. In 2020, he was named one of Major League Soccer’s 25 greatest players of all time.

At the time of his retirement, Beckerman was Major League Soccer’s all-time leading player in games played (498), games started (461) and minutes played (41,164) among outfield players. He was a nine-time MLS All-Star and a four-time club MVP.

Just four months after his playing career ended, Beckerman was named the second head coach in UVU men’s soccer history. In the three seasons since his hiring, Beckerman has produced 14 All-WAC nods, 31 Academic All-WAC honorees and two WAC Freshmen of the Year.

Beckerman’s first season also saw him receive the program’s first MLS SuperDraft pick, Jojea Kwizera, selected 15th in the first round by CF Montreal. Kwizera now plays for Rhode Island FC in the USL Championship and recently made his debut with the Rwandan national team.

Beckerman is a native of Crofton, Maryland, and lives in Salt Lake City with his wife, Kate, and is the parent of three children.

In addition to Beckerman, Lindsey Anderson, Kevin P. Gates, Robert Craig Poole and Rod Tueller will also be inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2024. For more information about the event and to purchase tickets, visit utahsportshalloffame.org.
