James Earl Jones died on Monday and it wasn’t long before his cinematic legacy was celebrated by Hollywood stars and collaborators.

Jones died at the age of 93, as Deadline first reported and IndieWire confirmed. The legendary EGOT winner was soon memorialized online by Barry Jenkins, Mark Hamill and others.

Jones famously voiced Darth Vader in Star Wars and Mufasa in The Lion King with his signature raspy voice. In 2011, he received an honorary Oscar, securing his EGOT status. Jones’ illustrious film career includes roles in Conan the Barbarian, Field of Dreams, Coming to America and The Hunt for Red October.

Jones made his film debut in 1964 in Stanley Kubrick’s “Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb” before starring in “The Great White Hope,” for which he received an Oscar nomination.

Jones’ last screen role was in 2021, when he reprised his role as King Jaffe Joffer in “Coming to America 2.” He later announced his retirement from voice acting in 2022 after voicing Darth Vader in the Disney+ series “Obi-Wan Kenobi.”

As “Star Wars” producer Kathleen Kennedy said in 2016, Jones always played a “big role” in the franchise.

Jones’ “Star Wars” co-star Mark Hamill tweeted in honor of his death, referencing their on-screen dynamic as father and son.

“REST IN PEACE, dad,” Hamill wrote.

Barry Jenkins, who recently directed a Disney spin-off of the Lion King series, wrote the lyrics “Forever and Forever” in honor of Jones.

Colman Domingo praised Jones as a “master of our craft” on stage and screen.

“We stand on your shoulders,” Domingo wrote. “You have given us your best.”

Directors Paul Feig and Mike Flanagan also used social media.

Feig commented: “James Earl Jones will never die. His talent, his work and his influence will always be with us. Rest in peace, Mr. Jones.”

Flanagan also wrote: “James Earl Jones… a true icon in every way. May he rest in peace.”

LeVar Burton added: “James Earl Jones… there will never be another human being with that special combination of character.”
