Barbie Phone Unveiled: A Vision in Pink, Complete with Mirror and Malibu Snake

There are few places you can go to escape the internet these days. Even in the real world, boundaries are blurred. But do you know a place that is free from the influence of social media? It’s pink, it’s made of plastic, and it’s all about living in the here and now – it’s Barbieland.

Not a moment too soon, your new Barbie dream phone is available in the UK from Wednesday and it couldn’t be cuter or more fun if it wanted to be. The ‘Power Pink’ flip phone is back to basics, with texting and calling as its main functions, but features plenty of Easter eggs and details that will delight Barbie fans.

We’ve had to wait six months for the Barbie Phone to be revealed. At Europe’s biggest mobile show MWC in February, HMD (whose specialty is phones) announced that they were teaming up with Mattel (whose specialty is toys) to create a themed device that will delight new and old Barbie fans alike. The Barbie Phone is available to pre-order now in the UK for £99 and will come to the US later in the fall due to slight differences in band requirements and operating system. At launch in October, HMD expects it to be priced at $129.

Barbie phone, opened. Barbie phone, opened.

Barbie would never leave the house without her phone and mirror.

Only now that the phone is on sale can we get a glimpse of the device’s design. It has a mirror on the front of the flip phone, so you have one less thing to carry around in your purse when you leave the house. The phone is just as pink on the inside as it is on the outside, and under the hood there is a pink removable battery.

The Barbie phone’s clamshell design is just one of the nostalgic touches that should appeal to older owners of the device. HMD, which also makes Nokia phones, is bringing back interchangeable covers that you can swap out to give the phone a completely different look (one of them is based on the best-selling Barbie from 1992). It’s a throwback to the bezel trend that was popular during the heyday of the Nokia 3210 and 3310, when each phone had a unique design – and not just because it had a case on it.

What’s in the box? Oh, just the best Barbie-themed accessories.

And the personalization options don’t stop there. The Barbie phone comes with a pearl strap and several phone charms that can be swapped out, as well as decorative stickers you can attach. All of the accessories are inspired by iconic Barbie looks, from roller skates to sunglasses.

It was important to show people, says Lars Silberbauer, CMO of HMD, that “a brand collaboration is not just about sticking a sticker on the front or back of the phone. It’s really about going into detail, diving into the storyline and doing something that is obviously Barbie but has never been seen before.”

That’s why the Barbie phone says “Hi Barbie!” when you first turn it on and shows you a missed call from Ken. “Ken will call because this is basically Barbie’s phone,” Silberbauer says. The story is embedded deep in the phone’s software, with a specially designed Barbie camera filter and a Malibu version of the classic Nokia game Snake.

Even unboxing is designed to be fun. Sustainable packaging is an increasingly common perk when buying a new phone, but that usually means it’s easily recyclable. HMD wanted to go a step further and create packaging that you might want to keep and reuse at home – so the Barbie phone box doubles as a jewelry box where you can keep spare accessories or store other bits and pieces. Designing the box “was a huge project in itself,” says Silberbauer. “It didn’t feel right to have little packages that you can throw away.”

The Barbie phone packaging also serves as a jewelry box.

As appealing as the Barbie phone may look, I wonder if HMD knows better than I do who will buy the device. As the world’s leading feature phone maker, the company has long been an advocate of simpler phones for adults, but it also wants to tap directly into the younger market.

Just last month, the company launched the Better Phone project – a collaboration with parents to create a healthier, more age-appropriate phone for kids and teens. As a feature phone without access to social media, the Barbie Phone would be an ideal first phone for kids, but I’m curious to see if HMD expects it to appeal to people of all generations.

No element of the device has escaped the pink.

“I’m lucky enough to have a focus group of two girls myself,” Silberbauer says of his young daughters. “Bringing a Barbie phone to life definitely made me a hero in their eyes.” But he adds that he expects it to be popular across many age groups, with adults enjoying the ability to have a fun “detox phone” in addition to their main device. To help with that, the phone will feature digital wellbeing tips, including self-care reminders.

While Barbie herself has nothing to prove, the Barbie phone is another story entirely. If it’s successful, Silberbauer hints that Ken could get his own phone at some point. “We may have something else up our sleeve,” he says.
