Baltimore Ravens restructure two more contracts

After restructuring the contract of star linebacker Roquan Smith on Monday, the Baltimore Ravens are not finished with their measures to free up salary space.

According to ESPN’s Field Yates, the Ravens also restructured the contracts of defensive tackle Nnamdi Madubuike (formerly Justin Madubuike) and kicker Justin Tucker. In total, they reportedly freed up $9.3 million in salary cap space before the season and are now 100 percent in salary cap compliance.

Last week, the Ravens were about $3.8 million over the cap with all of their contracts (including injured reserve, practice squad, etc.), but now they are under the cap with a few million left, all going according to plan.

“At some point we’re going to have to make some moves in the coming days and weeks, and we have all of that planned,” general manager Eric DeCosta told reporters on Thursday. “There’s a lot of things we can do. We’re going to stay within the salary cap and we’re going to be able to spend at least some money if a player is available that we think is going to help us be the best team we can be.”

Over The Cap says the Ravens were about $700,000 over the cap before news broke of the Madubuike and Tucker restructures. Factoring in Smith’s restructure, which saved $4.875 million against the cap, means the Madubuike and Tucker restructures saved about $4.425 million. Adding it all up, the Ravens should be about $3.725 million under the cap, with the emphasis on “should.”

While that gives DeCosta and Co. the opportunity to make some moves, it’s not much. While it’s no longer absolutely necessary, more moves to save on the salary cap could be in the works.

Regardless of what management plans, the Ravens’ full attention will be on Thursday’s season opener against the Kansas City Chiefs.
