Baltimore faces Kansas City in the NFL season opener on Thursday night

The NFL season is finally back and the opening game of the 2024 season is one of the most eagerly awaited of the entire year.

Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce (and maybe Taylor Swift?) will welcome reigning NFL MVP Lamar Jackson to Arrowhead Stadium at 8:20 ET on NBC. The matchup is a rematch of last season’s AFC title game, which Kansas City won 17-10 on the road.

Do the Chiefs have enough firepower to become the first team in NFL history to win three consecutive Super Bowls? Will the signing of running back Derrick Henry help Baltimore overcome the hurdle?

It all starts Thursday night. Stay with NBC News for game updates, highlights and analysis.

Chiefs want to win third Super Bowl in a row

No team in NFL history has won three consecutive Super Bowls. Will that change this season? The Chiefs have won eight consecutive division titles – the longest active streak in the NFL – and have made the playoffs nine consecutive seasons (also the longest active streak in the NFL).

What Derrick Henry means for Baltimore

The Ravens have signed All-Pro running back Derrick Henry as a free agent for two years and $16 million, which could be increased to up to $20 million with bonuses.

Henry comes from the Tennessee Titans. He has rushed for at least 1,500 yards in three of his last five seasons. The 30-year-old led the league in the running game in both 2019 and 2020 and has at least six consecutive seasons with 10+ rushing points.

Rematch of last season’s AFC title game

The Chiefs won the season’s final postseason game 17-10 on the road in Baltimore. In that game, the Ravens committed three turnovers (including two in the end zone) and raised questions about star QB Lamar Jackson.

Jackson, who was voted MVP last year, fell to just 2-4 overall in the playoffs.

Mahomes completed 30 of 39 passes for 241 yards and a touchdown in this game. Travis Kelce exploded with 11 catches, 116 yards and a touchdown.
