Bailey Zimmerman’s “Holding On” lyrics can give you the relief you need

Bailey Zimmerman’s most vulnerable song yet is a swelling introspection called “Holding On.” Find him asking (begging?) for help in this song story about relationship crossroads.

“Holding On” isn’t another stay-or-go power ballad. Austin Shawn and Blake Whiten have written a text that addresses the desperation half of a relationship. The fold makes it unique in the country music out there if your name isn’t Jelly Roll.

“Will you be strong and keep going?” If this were your last breath, would you waste it on me?” he asks to begin each chorus.

It’s always a risk when a young artist approaches more mature feelings, but Zimmerman finds a way to breathe without overexerting himself. There isn’t enough detail to tease out a specific life story from his past, which is a good thing because songs like these are best when the listener can understand the lyrics.

Sonically, the arrangement is constructed in a way that his fans will recognize. It is quite easy to ignore the details of his message and still feel the positive radiance of “holding on.” There’s no word yet on whether the song will get radio airplay, but this new track is sure to be a favorite for some on whatever album or EP Zimmerman releases next.

Bailey Zimmerman, “Holding On” Lyrics:

There was a time when I had the fight / And I could have made it through another night / But I’m losing my mind and can’t find the light / Then you take my hand and make it all right / If we had the choice, to block out the noise.

Choir:
Will you be strong and continue to persevere? / If this were your last breath, would you waste it on me / Stay here when I’m in the dark / Be the angel that comes down and lifts my heart / When everything is wrong, we can be strong / And keep holding on / And keep persevering.

IIt’s been a while since I last felt / Anything but this kind of hell / But you hang up your halo and everything lets go / This has pulled me so deep.

Repeat chorus

Hold on, hold on, hold on.

Top 20 Songs of 2024, Ranking (So Far)

New country artists dominate this list of the top country songs of 2024, but that doesn’t mean traditional country isn’t represented early and often.

Airplay charts, sales data and streaming numbers helped create this list of the top 20 country music songs of 2024, but the staff and opinion of Taste of Country readers had the biggest influence.

Songs included on previous Top Country Songs lists were not eligible. A song may have been released in 2023, but to count it had to have the majority of recorded airplay or impact that year.
