“Backyard Sports” celebrates big comeback

Pablo Sanchez, arguably the most powerful character in video game history, will be joined by his large circle of friends as Backyard sports The franchise returns after being gone for almost 10 years.

If you are not familiar with the Backyard sports Franchise started in 1997 with the PC game Baseball in the backyardIt was a hit and quickly spawned several sequels about a group of neighborhood kids who come together to play outdoor sports like basketball, football, soccer, and hockey. The series hasn’t had a new installment since two mobile games in 2015, Backyard Sports: Baseball 2015 And Backyard Sports: Basketball 2015.

Originally published by Atari and developed by Humongous Entertainment, Backyard sports The brand is being revived by Playground Productions, described as “a STEM-focused family entertainment company led by former Chicago private school teacher Lindsay Barnett.”

A few years ago, one of the original Backyard sports The developers answered some questions from fans on Reddit, where he recalled that the game was developed in a completely different era of gaming history.

“Most of the team were 20-year-olds and had no children,” he wrote. “We didn’t consult educational experts, we didn’t do extensive focus testing, A/B testing (because we ended up burning our game to CD-ROM), etc. We just made a game that we thought kids would enjoy.”

One of the series’ quirks among fans was the absolute dominance of one of its characters, Pablo Sanchez, who was seemingly good at every sport – as catalogued in a recent deep dive on the YouTube channel Secret Base. It turns out that Sanchez was extremely and unfairly good. Even better than some of the real professional athletes featured in the games.

Playground Productions plans to expand the Backyard sports Brand in more than just games: merchandise, film adaptations and television projects – the whole package. We wanted almost 10 years without a peep from the series, and now we’re getting way too much of it.
