Avery Johnson injury update: What happened to Johnson?

The Kansas State Wildcats watched star QB Avery Johnson leave the game after a third-quarter completion against Colorado. Given that it was a one-on-one game with a seven-point lead, it was the nature of Johnson’s injury that caused concern for many.

What happened to Avery Johnson?

Johnson dropped back to throw, scanned the ball and found an open receiver in the middle of the field. In the face of pressure and despite a leaping Colorado defender, Johnson elicited a precise pass but immediately went down in pain.

Upon closer inspection, Johnson was not touched by any defender during the play, but immediately grabbed him by his left side after throwing the ball across the middle of the field.

He lay on the floor in obvious pain, grimacing and noticeably reaching for his left side, just above his left hip.

Johnson left the field under his own power, albeit with some help from the trainers, and was seen jogging lightly into the locker room shortly afterwards.

He left the game against Colorado with a 14-7 lead, throwing 86 yards and rushing for a touchdown.

Former Penn State and UConn quarterback Ta’Quan Roberson replaced Johnson on the drive.

Update: Johnson was shown lightly jogging back to the Kansas State sideline as the drive neared its end, but he remained on the sideline as Roberson ended the drive.
