Austin Wells is making a loud impression in his return to the Yankees lineup

Austin Wells started Game 3 of the World Series on the bench and helped save the Yankees’ season – at least for a day – in Game 4.

Wells moved back up to No. 8 on Tuesday night and made an immediate impact with two extra-base hits, including a sixth-inning home run in an 11-4 win over the Dodgers that moved the Yankees to within three-1 in the series.

After Anthony Volpe got one out in the bottom of the second against Dodgers opener Ben Casparius, Wells followed with a booming double to center.

Volpe misread the play and then stumbled, preventing the speedy shortstop from scoring on the long drive and robbing Wells of an RBI.

The misplay ultimately cost the Yankees no price, as Alex Verdugo followed with a grounder to first that scored Volpe from third and cut the Yankees’ deficit to one run.

Then, in the bottom of the sixth, Wells led off the inning with the Yankees ahead by just one run and smashed a pitch into the second deck in right field.

The home run gave the Yankees an insurance run that undoubtedly benefited the bullpen.

It was the kind of reaction Aaron Boone expected the day he decided to go with Jose Trevino in Monday’s lineup against Wells, who had been in a brutal slump since mid-September.

“I’m really still confident that he’s going to have the right shot, a big shot in a big spot, as the series goes on, because that’s what he is,” Boone said Monday. “I feel like his DNA is that he’s a hitter. But he went through it a little bit.”

That’s putting it mildly.

Because Wells had hits in each of his first two postseason games, he entered Tuesday just 2-of-36, with 17 strikeouts in his last 10 games.
