Attack on Oakland woman near her home shocks family

An Oakland man said two members of his immediate family have been victims of separate violent attacks, the latest of which occurred near his home and left him feeling like it’s time to leave town.

Alan Wang and his wife usually take a walk through their Oakland Hills neighborhood every night after dinner. But on Monday night, Alan Wang said, his wife was walking alone and then the unthinkable happened.

“He was brandishing what looked like a sword or a long stick and yelling, ‘Hey, I have to ask you a question.’ But of course, he didn’t want to ask her any questions. He really just wanted to hit her and ended up hitting her three or four times,” Wang said.

Wang said his wife was walking past a car with two people inside just a few hundred meters from their house. Then, Wang said, a young man jumped out of the car and attacked her.

“She came along here, I think over here, and he hit her, and then she went this way and tried to avoid him, and he hit her two more times. And then the neighbor upstairs saw what was going on and started screaming. She came down to help my wife, and then the kid ran down the street into the car, and they took off at full speed,” Wang said.

He said his wife suffered cuts on her arm and back. They called the police, but the suspects had disappeared before officers arrived.

Now all they can think is: What if it happens again?

“My wife was thinking about taking my six-year-old daughter on the walk yesterday. What if she had been there? There are elderly people walking on this street. What if they had been on the walk,” Wang said.

Sadly, he said, this is not the first time someone in his family has been attacked in Oakland. His mother was brutally beaten by strangers in the middle of the street just two months ago.

“She was stopped on the road by a car while she was driving. A boy got out and started pushing her around to find money. He found nothing. The other driver came out and asked, ‘Did you find anything?’ He said no, and then they beat her,” Wang said.

He said he had had enough of the two attacks. He no longer felt safe in his own city, not even in his own home.

“It’s just that there is so much crime. If you look at Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, the basic need for safety is missing. There is no safety in this city,” Wang said.

He said he had no choice but to move. He and his wife are already looking for apartments in other areas, and he hopes to get his mother out of the city as well.
