Aston Villa and Leicester news: Albrighton announces retirement

Marc Albrighton has retired from professional football at the age of 34.

The winger has made 310 appearances in the Premier League, most notably for Leicester City – with whom he helped win the title in the 2015/16 season – and Aston Villa, his boyhood club.

In a post on his Instagram, externalhe said: “As a footballer, the day comes when you have to hang up your boots and I have often wondered how I would feel when my time came. Now that that day has come, I am filled with gratitude and peace.

“From the moment I first scored a goal as a young boy, it was always my dream to play for Aston Villa. To have achieved that once would have been more than enough, but to play over 100 games for the club of my boyhood is something I will forever be immensely proud of.

“What followed was a decade of extraordinary moments that I could not have imagined in my wildest dreams. Ten unforgettable years at Leicester City, winning major trophies, playing and scoring goals in the Champions League and forging lasting bonds with incredible people at such a special and unique club.

“I would like to express my sincerest thanks to everyone who has supported me along the way – the staff, managers, coaches, owners, my agent Tim and of course my teammates. Without you all, none of this would have been possible.”
