Artur Beterbiev vs. Dmitry Bivol results: Winners, results and reaction

Artur Beterbiev is the new undisputed light heavyweight champion after a highly qualified fight with Dmitry Bivol, but the coronation is not without controversy.

Beterbiev prevailed by majority decision (116-112, 115-113 and 114-114). It seemed like Bivol had overtaken Beterbiev in most laps, although Beterbiev was strong in the last three laps.

Bivol’s defense, movement and timely combinations could have seen him win all but one of the first eight rounds reasonably cleanly. Although Beterbiev’s punches were heavier, he didn’t land enough in the first eight rounds to win most of those frames.

I scored the fight 116-112 for Bivol. As it turned out, Beterbiev won the fight with his performance in the championship rounds.

CompuBox’s Ben Chan expressed this in a statement about the fight stats for the main event: “Bivol landed 50% of his power punches while Beterbiev landed only 29% of his punches,” Chan wrote. “Bivol landed 33 power punches in the first six rounds, while Beterbiev landed 23. In the final six rounds, Beterbiev turned the tide by landing 67 power punches, while Bivol landed 51. In rounds eleven and twelve, Beterbiev landed 29 power punches, while Bivol landed 19. The fighters were defeated by 4 in 8 of the 12 rounds contested or fewer punches landed separately. One judge scored the fight a draw, 114-114. The other two judges scored the fight 115-113 and 116-112 for Beterbiev.”

Here’s a look at the batting stats:

Beterbiev won the final three rounds on all three judges’ scorecards, which made the difference.

If Bivol had won just one round on all judges’ cards, the majority of the fight would have ended in a draw.

Here’s a look at the official scorecards, thanks to Boxing Scene’s post.

Despite this detail, there were many in the boxing community who felt Bivol had been robbed.

Unsurprisingly, Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn said he felt his fighter deserved the decision.

Former world champion Josh Taylor said he believed Bivol won the fight.

WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson thought Bivol would win and was critical of the judges on X after the fight.

Spinnin Backfist objected to the widest scorecard, which came from Pawel Kardyni.

UFC Roster Watch felt that Bivol was “robbed.”

BJPenn.com’s Josh Evanoff thought Bivol won.

Former champion Tony Bellew also said he scored the fight for Bivol.

The fight and your decision on the winner depends on what you value. If you like the fighter to come forward most of the night, it’s easier to see how Beterbiev gets the nod.

If you are a bigger fan of clean boxing, more landings and higher odds, you will like Bivol’s performance more. I think Beterbiev did more damage overall, but Bivol won more rounds.

The latter concept is said to be crucial, but that wasn’t the case on Saturday.

We’ll see if a rematch happens as the boxing community would obviously love a sequel. Here’s a look at all the results from the latest map from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

  • Artur Beterbiev defeats Dmitry Bivol via majority decision (116-112, 115-113, 114-114) to win the undisputed light heavyweight championship
  • Fabio Wardley defeated. Frazer Clarke defeated the British Heavyweight Championship with a first round knockout
  • (c) Jai Opetaia defeated Jack Massey by 6th round TKO – IBF Cruiserweight Championship
  • Chris Eubank Jr. defeated Kamil Szeremeta by TKO in the 7th round
  • (c) Skye Nicolson defeats Raven Chapman by unanimous decision – 99-91, 98-92(x2) – WBC featherweight title
  • Ben Whittaker vs Liam Cameron – Technical Draw

Aside from Beterbiev’s win, the other standout performances came from Wardley, Opetaia and Nicolson.

Wardley’s devastating first-round knockout in his rematch with Clarke has some wondering whether he is ready to step onto the world heavyweight stage. A real fight for him could be against bridgerweight champion Lawrence Okolie, who recently moved up to heavyweight.

Opetaia was masterful in stopping Massey. Opetaia looks ready for world-class competition. He has been playing around with options to challenge the winner of Beterbiev-Bivol.

Nicolson was skilled and superior to Chapman as she easily won a unanimous decision and earned some strong chances against some of the bigger names in her weight range.

Additionally, Eubank Jr. appears to be on the verge of a final clash with Conor Benn, as he climbed into the ring for a face-off following his rival’s TKO victory.

Overall, it was another strong evening of boxing in Saudi Arabia.
