Arsenal fans endured another European away day to forget at the San Siro on Wednesday night, and it’s becoming an all too familiar experience.

The Gunners entered their fourth Champions League game of the season having failed to win any of their previous three Premier League games. The mood in the club is far removed from the mood of recent years.

Most expected a close affair and that’s exactly what they got as a stubborn Inter Milan side neutralized Arsenal’s attack and took the three points thanks to a relatively soft penalty for a Mikel Merino handball.

It was a brave performance in the Serie A champions’ home game, but ultimately another away defeat in Europe.

While Mikel Arteta has received plaudits for his back-to-back title runs, his European record is slipping further and further into the background.

And it is clear that the biggest problems lie outside the Emirates.

Opta has revealed that the north London club are winless in their last five away games in the Champions League (D2 L3), their longest winless run in the competition since February 2005 (also 5).

Arsenal have also failed to score in their last four away games, a record that is simply hard to ignore.

A 0-0 draw with Atalanta was their only other game of the Champions League season, a game that required a miraculous double penalty save from David Raya to keep the score level.

Last season saw an impressive 2-1 draw at Sevilla in the group stage, but that was accompanied by a deserved 2-1 defeat against Lens and a dismal 1-1 draw at PSV.

And in the knockout round there was no reason for the traveling fans to celebrate.

The Gunners were undone by a stunning 94th-minute winner from Galeno in a 1-0 defeat at Porto before progressing through the last 16 on penalties.

There were hopes of reaching a semi-final for the first time since 2009 as they faced struggling FC Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals and played out an entertaining 2-2 draw in the first leg.

Arteta’s men offered extremely little in the second leg as Joshua Kimmich scored the only goal of an uneventful game to send them home.

Overall, the Premier League team has only won one of seven away games since returning to the Champions League after a seven-year absence in 2023.

They have also only scored four times, a stark contrast to their impressive away form at home during this period.

Even in the Europa League season before, Arsenal needed an own goal to salvage a draw at Sporting in the first knockout round before being eliminated on penalties at the Emirates.

The numbers are grim and Arteta’s men will be under huge pressure to show more in their upcoming visits to Sporting and Girona.

Fortunately, Arsenal’s home form should be more than enough to progress to the next round in the new Champions League format.

Arsenal sit 12th in the 36-team table, just two points outside the automatic qualification zone.
