Mikel Arteta speaks to Amazon Prime. “Very excited…looking forward to it…the kind of scenario we want to be involved in…(the starting team) fits right…lots of quality…physicality…scoring threat…everything we’re looking for…(PSG coach Luis Enrique is a very tough one Opponents… it’s a big test for us… we have to play with a lot of courage and determination… take advantage of the crowd… make it a very difficult place.”

Arsenal and PSG don’t have too much history together, but what there is between them benefits the Gunners. Back in 1994, the clubs met in the semi-finals of the European Cup Winners’ Cup: Ian Wright and David Ginola ensured a 1-1 win in Paris, and the popular Kevin Campbell scored the only goal in the second leg. Arsenal beat Parma in the final. Fast forward to 2016-17 and two games in the Champions League groups: In Paris it was 1-1 again, Edinson Cavani scored after just 44 seconds, Alexis Sánchez equalized, Marco Verratti and Olivier Giroud were given their marching orders in stoppage time . The game at the Emirates ended 2-2, with Cavani and Giroud finding the right nets and Verratti and Alex Iwobi scoring their own goals. Both teams reached the knockout stages and PSG coach Unai Emery moved to Arsenal a year later.

Arsenal’s starting XI – and their tweet doesn’t lie – has the same name as in the 4-2 thrashing of Leicester City three days ago. Their new midfielder Mikel Merino has recovered from his injury and is sitting on the bench awaiting his debut for his new club. Ben White remains injured and missing.

There is no Ousmane Dembélé for PSG. Despite having scored four times in six Ligue 1 games so far this season, he is terrified. Luckily for the Parisians, Bradley Barcola has scored six out of six goals so far. Gianluigi Donnarumma returns in goal after missing the last three games with a thigh problem.

preamble

Arsenal could only manage a draw at Atalanta in their first game on the brand new mega-table of the Champions League. PSG, on the other hand, won 1-0 against Girona. But with seven games left to play – and no one really knows how it will turn out until then – they’re hardly in the must-win zone. So is this a big game or not? Strictly speaking dramatically, no, not really. But it’s still one of the giants of the English game against the leading side in France and it will feel good to win. Even though there is no real danger for either team tonight, we are still in devaluation territory. where the win coupled with an impressive performance bodes well for the long road ahead. Big game then? Big enough! Kick-off is at 8pm BST. It’s on.
