Arne Slot’s press conference: Cup win in Brighton, Gakpo form, Jaros appearance and more

On Vitezslav Jaros’ performance, both in terms of his crucial saves and with the ball at his feet…

I like the last thing you said because everyone could see how important his saves were. I think their first big chance of the game came when he saved the one-on-one and of course we all remember a save or two in the second half. But he added how comfortable he was with the ball at his feet: making the right decisions about when to go short and when to direct the ball towards the striker, and the quality that Jarell Quansah and Joe Bringing in Gomez helped him build up. I really liked this triangle when we had the ball today.

What he saw from Dominik Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones after deciding to start without a recognized center forward…

Yes, I believe they did (which is what I asked). When you play these two without a No.9, you’re always a bit worried about whether you have enough runs behind the back row, because these two also like to play into the midfield and combine there to form triangles there. But I think what they did really well was the combination and trying to be an extra midfielder but don’t forget to make the deep runs too.

And it helped that Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo were constant threats at the back too, so I generally liked what I saw. I prefer to play with a No. 9, but if they’re not available – and of course we had Darwin (Nunez) available, but I think it wasn’t good for him today after three games and with the schedule coming up to start – then this was the result of what we came up with and I think the players did a really good job.
