Applications for property tax refund now possible

Eligible homeowners in Montana can now apply for a property tax refund.

Refunds of up to $675 can be requested at getmyrebate.mt.gov and applications must be submitted by October 1.

To qualify, individuals must be Montana taxpayers who have been billed and paid property taxes on a primary residence and have done the following:

· Residency in Montana for at least seven months in 2023;

· Lived in this Montana residence for at least seven months in 2023;

· You have been charged property taxes, including special levies and other fees, for that residence; and

· Property tax paid for this residence

To claim the refund, taxpayers can either visit getmyrebate.mt.gov or submit a paper claim form.

The application requires the physical address, geocode, the amount of property tax paid as shown on the property tax bill, and the names and social security numbers of the taxpayer and any spouses or dependents.

The IRS has created several tools at getmyrebate.mt.gov to help taxpayers compile this information, including a video showing how to find a property’s geocode.

Taxpayers can choose how they will receive the refund during the application process. The fastest way to receive the refund is through direct deposit into a bank account, but taxpayers can also have the refund sent to them by check.

The department will process applications as they are received and will issue refunds by December 31.

In 2022, Governor Greg Gianforte proposed a $2,000 property tax refund for Montana homeowners on their primary residence in his “Budget for Montana Families.”
