Apple cancels wide theatrical release of film “Wolfs” with Brad Pitt and George Clooney, streaming date announced

In a change of strategy, Apple has moved away from its original plans to release Wolf’s upcoming film in theaters. Previously, the plan was to release the film exclusively in theaters on thousands of screens worldwide for an extended period, following the pattern of previous releases such as Killers of the Flower Moon, Napoleon, Argylle and most recently Fly Me to the Moon.

The company announced today that the film will have a small, limited release in theaters on September 20, followed by a worldwide streaming debut on Apple TV+ on Friday, September 27.

In “Wolfs,” Brad Pitt and George Clooney play two lonely fixers entrusted with the same job. Jon Watts directs this action comedy.

While some see Apple’s exit from theaters as a harbinger of doom, Apple is supporting the film by announcing that work on a sequel has already begun. Deadline also reports high test scores with audiences in early previews, describing the film as a “crowd favorite.”

Rather than saying anything about the quality of this particular title, the change might be more of a reality check of Apple’s mediocre to poor box office performance to date. Apple has spent a lot of money releasing films like Argylle and Fly Me to the Moon in theaters without much to show for it.

While the company says it plans to release other films in theaters in the future, such as the upcoming 2025 F1 film (also starring Brad Pitt), it seems it wants to be more selective going forward. For example, the other major original films on this year’s slate are all announced as direct-to-streaming productions.

If you’re an Apple TV+ subscriber, this is probably a good thing, as non-exclusive theatrical releases mean you can see the film at home sooner. Under the original plan, Wolfs would have been exclusive to theaters for about 45 days before being available to buy or rent on premium video-on-demand platforms for about a month, and only then appearing on Apple TV+ months after the film’s original premiere, likely around November.

But starting September 27, anyone with an Apple TV+ subscription will be able to stream “Wolfs.”
