Anyone with $100,000 can now get a Cybertruck, despite Tesla’s 1 million reservations

Although Tesla has over a million reservations for the Cybertruck and claims demand has been assured for years, anyone with $100,000 can now get a Cybertruck in the U.S., even though Tesla has only delivered about 25,000 units to reservation holders in the U.S.

Last week we reported that Tesla had begun inviting Cybertruck reservation holders who had reserved the truck just a few weeks earlier.

This was somewhat surprising considering Tesla claimed to have over 1 million reservations for the Cybertruck, but estimates that it has only delivered about 25,000 of them so far.

A few days later, Tesla stopped the reservation process for the Cybertruck in the US and opened the order option to anyone. Canadian reservation holders were also invited to order.

Tesla’s order page for the Cybertruck in the US shows that buyers of the dual-motor Cybertruck can receive this delivery this month or next month at the latest:

This would indicate that Tesla has exhausted demand from Cybertruck reservation holders in the US.

As we reported, the Cybertruck currently costs CAD $138,000 before taxes in Canada, which is expected to severely limit its market in the country.

The next step to reach a larger market in North America would be to open orders for non-Foundation Series Cybertrucks. The Foundation Series discounts options by bundling them all for $20,000, but if you don’t want any of those options, the truck becomes $20,000 more expensive.

Some of the more than one million reservation holders are from countries outside North America, but Tesla has not yet confirmed plans to launch the Cybertruck outside North America because changes would be required for approval.

Electrek’s opinion

I wouldn’t be surprised if only about 5% of reservation holders in the US ultimately place their Cybertruck orders.

Many Tesla fans try to counter this by saying that only the Foundation Series is available and cheaper versions of the Cybertruck are not yet available. However, the numbers for the Cybertruck all point to the vast majority of reservation holders opting for the dual-motor version, which is also available.

While the Foundation Series adds $20,000 to the price, it also offers a discount on options and accessories. I wouldn’t be shocked if the removal of the Foundation Series, which will likely happen in the next few days, only convinces another 10% of Cybertruck reservation holders in the US.

Even without the Foundation Series, I think this suggests that at these prices, which are about 50% higher than when it was first introduced in 2019, Tesla is entering a very limited market for the Cybertruck in North America.

Tesla needs to manage to lower prices or at least consider the plan B that Elon mentioned earlier: a pickup truck with a more conventional look.
