Jayson Tatum and Anthony Edwards were two of the five NBA stars followed by Netflix cameras for the “Starting 5” docuseries throughout the 2023-24 NBA season. They delivered plenty of content in their first match in November.

The first episode of the series covered how Edwards led his Minnesota Timberwolves to a 114-109 overtime win over Tatum’s Boston Celtics. Edwards dropped a game-high 38 points and played great defense against Tatum in crucial time, including in OT when he gained possession of the ball after running afoul of the C’s superstar.

As we celebrated the win in the Timberwolves locker room, Edwards scoffed at those who think Tatum is the best in the NBA.

“You saw Tatum try to get me on the counter and bust his ass twice. He started talking nonsense,” Edwards said. “Tatum was talking crazy and said, ‘Yeah, I’m here,’ then I said, ‘I’ll be back.’ I’m talking about the best player in the league, you guys are crazy.

Tatum got the last laugh. In the next meeting between the Celtics and Timberwolves two months later, he scored 45 points and led Boston to a 127-120 victory in another OT thriller. The C’s also won their third and final match against the Wolves in Minnesota 104-102.

After losing to Edwards and the Timberwolves in November, Tatum spoke about the pressure that comes with being the best team in the league.

“We’re expected to win every single night and if we lose the damn world ends, everyone’s talking about us on TV, how we’re not equipped to win a championship, how I can’t lead.” team,” he said.

The loss in Minnesota was one of just 18 for Boston all season. The Celtics made it through the NBA playoffs as number 1 and defeated the Dallas Mavericks in the finals.

Tatum vs. Edwards makes the Celtics-Timberwolves a must-watch game on television when they face off next season. Their meeting is scheduled for November 24th and January 2nd.
