Kentucky quarterback Brock Vandagriff made something out of nothing with a scramble in the first quarter of Saturday’s game against Tennessee. Only Vandagriff and the Wildcats should have gotten more out of the game, but the referees missed a blatant penalty kick by the Volunteers.

Vandagriff scrambled to his right and appeared to look across the field for a long pass. Seeing no option, he instead opted to tuck the ball away and try to gain a few yards with his feet. The quarterback gained two yards before going out of bounds down the Tennessee sideline. He was then hit by Omarr Norman-Lott, a Volunteers defensive lineman who wasn’t even on the field for the play.

Much to the confusion of presenters Tom Hart and Jordan Rodgers, no penalty was awarded.

“I’m a little surprised there wasn’t a flag raised here,” Rodgers said.

“Yes, you have to mark that,” Hart shouted.

“This is a big mistake by this incumbent team.”

This wasn’t a situation where Vandagriff was running full speed toward a player on the bench who couldn’t quite get out of the way. Apparently, as Rodgers noted, Norman-Lott was trying to hit Vandagriff.

“It wasn’t a ‘You walked into my outstretched hands,'” Rodgers replied. “He held out his hands.”

“This is a big mistake by this officiating team,” Hart added.

Tennessee definitely came away with one here. A player hit that far outside the field of play will almost always be called out, even if the player taking the hit is on the field and also running at full speed. Norman-Lott wasn’t even on the pitch for the play in question, making it harder to understand how that penalty was missed.
