Android phones are selling cheaper as shipments grow 9 times faster than iPhones

The new IDC phone shipment forecast for the year is here, and growth in Android phone Sales are expected to be nine times higher than Apple’s iPhones.

The renowned research firm predicts that global smartphone shipments in 2024 will reach 1.23 billion units, a healthy growth of 5.8% compared to last year’s shipments. International Data Corporation’s Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker recorded a whopping 12% growth in the first quarter, when the Galaxy S25 series was launched, and a 9% year-on-year increase in shipments in the second quarter, which ended in June.

The renewed optimism about smartphone sales comes hot on the heels of major brands releasing the first handsets with generative AI capabilities, which IDC predicts will see a staggering 344% increase in sales this year and reach a market share of no less than 18% in their first year of operation.

A lot also depends on the sales of the iPhone 16 series, as it will be the first to ship with Apple Intelligence, Apple’s version of GenAI, which is a bit late compared to Samsung, Google and Oppo, which now have not only flagships but also AI-powered mid-range phones.

While AI phones are still expensive, shipment growth is mainly driven by rising Android sales in China and emerging markets. In fact, the Android phone Shipments are expected to grow by more than 7% this year, which is nine times the sales growth forecast for the Apple iPhone.

However, when it comes to actual profits from phone sales, Apple is still king. Its iPhones will have an average selling price of $982 this year, or probably more if the iPhone 16 Pro actually increases in price. Android phones, on the other hand, sell for an average of $281 worldwide, three and a half times less than iPhones.
