Andrea Mitchell said she will leave her daily MSNBC show after the inauguration but will continue to report for the NBCU platforms as NBC News’ chief foreign affairs correspondent and chief Washington correspondent.

On MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell reports Today she told viewers: “And after holding the anchor chair every day for sixteen years, I want to have time to do more of what I love most: socializing more, listening and reporting on the ground, especially as whoever gets elected next week will take on the monumental task of managing two wars abroad and political divisions here at home.

“So after opening next January, I asked for the opportunity to continue covering these stories, but from a different angle — still at NBC News and at MSNBC and still as chief Washington and foreign policy correspondent. Just not on the schedule of a daily show.”

Her MSNBC show was the longest-running program on the network’s daytime schedule since it launched in 2008. The broadcaster hasn’t said what will replace them.

Mitchell has covered every presidential campaign for NBC News since 1980 and every national political convention since 1972, as well as seven presidential elections. She joined the network in 1978.

Mitchell said: “Next year, you will still see me in your living rooms, on your mobile devices and on other platforms – and perhaps in your hometowns and cities, where I will still be asking questions to get the answers you want earned.”

In a note to employees, NBCU executives Rashida Jones, Rebecca Blumenstein, Janelle Rodriguez and Libby Leist wrote, “Andrea remains one of the country’s leading and most trusted experts on foreign and domestic policy.” Her in-depth sourcing and ability to conduct interviews with The biggest newsmakers are unmatched. Her contributions to NBC News over the past 46 years have been invaluable to the network and we are thrilled that she will remain an integral part of the News Group for years to come.”

In the third quarter Andrea Mitchell reports averaged 753,000 viewers, trailing Fox News’ Outnumbered in total viewers, but ahead of CNN Insider politicssaid Nielsen.
