Amari Cooper Trade Details: What Will the Buffalo Bills Pay Him?

The Buffalo Bills made a significant move today to bolster their receiver room by acquiring veteran wide receiver Amari Cooper from the Cleveland Browns.

Thanks to the restructuring of Cooper’s contract with the Browns last offseason, the Buffalo Bills will be able to fit Amari Cooper’s contract into their available cap space with relative ease. Cleveland is responsible for his signing bonus and any dead caps on his contract, leaving the Bills with only the prorated portion of his base salary of $1.21 million for the remainder of the 2024 season. This amounts to about $800,000 after six weeks, a manageable number for Buffalo’s cap situation.

In addition to Amari Cooper’s base salary, his contract also includes performance-based incentives (per Spotrac), which could impact the Bills’ cap space in 2025 depending on his on-field performance. Cooper can earn $1 million if he is named first-team All-Pro and $500,000 for second-team All-Pro honors. In addition, he will receive a $1 million bonus tied to reaching 1,251 receiving yards on the season.

Cooper, who will be 31 years old by the 2025 season, is also positioned as an unrestricted free agent (UFA) after this season. This will allow the Bills to evaluate his long-term fitness before making a commitment beyond this season. If Cooper delivers strong results, the Bills could negotiate a new contract to keep him. Alternatively, if the adjustment is not optimal, they will not be bound to future financial obligations beyond 2024.

Looking forward, Spotrac estimates Amari Cooper’s market value at $22.1 million per year, reflecting his status as the top wide receiver in the NFL.
