The Guardians

Cleveland suffered a wild night in the Bronx, losing Game 1 5-2.

With starter Alex Cobb in a major stalemate, first-year manager Stephen Vogt opted to play rookie Joey Cantillo in a pressured spot with the bases loaded.

As catcher Bo Naylor struggled behind the plate, Cantillo’s control was disastrous, sending several balls across the plate and eventually allowing two runs that scored in the third. He threw a Cleveland postseason record four wild throws over the nerve-wracking route.

Cleveland fell behind 4-0 in the fourth.

Pedro Avila pitched 2 2/3 hitless innings with one strikeout.

Brayan Rocchio livened up the offense with a solo shot in the sixth, while Steven Kwan continued his hot streak with an RBI single in the eighth. Those were the first two runs allowed by New York’s bullpen all postseason.

Hoping to secure some separation in the Bronx, Cleveland will turn to its best arm in the rotation, Tanner Bibee.

Surprisingly, the meat of the Guardians bullpen wasn’t touched last night. Cade Smith, Hunter Gaddis, Tim Herrin and, if necessary, Emmanuel Clase will be ready to take the spotlight when the time comes. It’s the first time this postseason that all four aren’t there.

Steven Kwan has scored in all six of his postseason games and has an 11-game postseason hitting streak dating back to the 2022 ALDS. He is touting a .480 batting average this postseason. Kwan took a 1-for-4 lead in Game 1 with an RBI single. He has three multi-hit games in his last four games.

Brayan Rocchio quietly scored eight goals in six games this postseason. He sets a Cleveland franchise record for longest winning streak to start a postseason career, joining Lonnie Chisenhall and Jhonny Peralta.

The Yankees

Starting with a solo home run by Juan Soto in the third, New York’s strong team got the better of Cobb and found itself in a favorable position against Cantillo. His ferocious arm got three on board and the Bronx Bombers went to work.

Aaron Judge and Stanton both scored on wild throws. Stanton also fired a hit into the stands in the seventh, extending the Yankees’ lead to 5-1.

New York drew seven walks in Game 1.

Carlos Rodon got off to a strong start, allowing three hits and one run and striking out nine in six innings of work. Now they will leave it to their ace, Gerrit Cole. New York pitching struck out a total of 14 Guardians in the opening game.

New York will look to take a 2-0 series lead and move one step closer to its first World Series appearance since 2009.

After 15 2/3 innings of scoreless ball, the Yankees bullpen finally allowed something to slip through when Tim Hill was charged with an earned run in the eighth inning. Clay Holmes and closer Luke Weaver combined for 2 2/3 scoreless work. Weaver earned his fourth save with a five-out shutout in 24 pitches.

Juan Soto started the series with a bang, hitting a home run in the third to break the scoreless tie and start a decisive inning. He ended the evening with 2:3. In five postseason games, Soto is batting .353 with one home run, one double and three RBI. In 13 career games against the Guardians, Soto posted a .295 average with four doubles, five home runs and 12 RBI.

Giancarlo Stanton continued his hot streak with a breakout hit in the seventh. It was his second home run of the postseason and his 13th postseason bomb overall. Stanton is batting .368 with five RBI.

Today’s pitching matchup

(NY) Gerrit Cole (1-0, 3.00 ERA) vs. (CLE) Tanner Bibee (0-0, 2.08)

Cole is the definition of an ace. Cleveland had to beat presumptive 2024 AL Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal and will now face the reigning AL Cy Young winner. On August 22 against the Guardians, Cole went six innings and allowed one hit and zero runs. He also had two strikeouts and five walks.

He owns a WHIP of 1.25 with eight strikeouts in two games this postseason and has won his last three decisions. He finished Game 4 of the ALDS against the Royals with seven innings, allowing six hits and one earned run.

Cole went 8-5 with a 3.41 ERA and 99 strikeouts during the regular season.

Facing Cole at Yankee Stadium in his third career postseason start is a dream matchup for Bibee. He has made two no-decisions that turned out to be Guardians’ wins, and has nine strikeouts with a 1.27 whip in his first two starts. Against New York, he made just one start in his career, earning the win in five innings with five strikeouts, allowing four hits and two earned runs. He allowed a total of two runs in 8 2/3 innings in the postseason campaign.

Bibee went 12-8 with a 3.47 ERA and recorded 187 strikeouts in the regular season. When Bibee takes the mound this season, Cleveland is 24-9 overall.

Here’s part of a story about Cantillo’s wild night in the Bronx in Game 1 from cleveland.com. Guardians beat author Paul Hoynes.

NEW YORK – Give rookie left-hander Joey Cantillo an A for his performance.

Not so much for what he did on the mound Monday night in Game 1 of the American League Championship Series, but for what he did afterward. This is about how Cantillo handled things after throwing four wild pitches in the Guardians’ 5-2 loss to the Yankees at Yankee Stadium.

Three of New York’s five runs came on a record number of wild pitches from Cantillo.

“My performance made the difference in the game,” Cantillo said. “Well, I live with it. I’m excited to see how we all get involved on Tuesday and the rest of the series.”

Cantillo relieved right-hander Alex Cobb with the bases loaded and two outs in the third inning after Cobb had back problems and left hip strain. Against left guard Anthony Rizzo, Cantillo threw his first wild throw to score Aaron Judge from third for a 2-0 lead. After accompanying Rizzo to load the bases, he threw another wild pitch to Alex Verdugo to score Giancarlo Stanton for a 3-0 lead.

“It wasn’t that I wasn’t prepared,” Cantillo said. “It was about going in there and doing what you’re supposed to do. That’s executing. I didn’t execute tonight. I will learn from it and be ready for the next opportunity.”
