Al Roker reacts to Hoda Kotb’s ‘Today’ exit and thinks about being a grandpa

When Al Roker received a call from Hoda Kotb at 3:45 a.m., his first thought was to “panic.”

Kotb, 60, called to share the news of her departure from the “Today” show early next year after serving as co-host with Savannah Guthrie since 2018. Speaking to USA TODAY in New York on Tuesday, Roker, 70, said he “couldn’t be happier” for his colleague, who told fans she’s retiring to spend more time with her children, but on NBC -Family will remain.

“She can live her life, do things and explore things,” he said.

“If I were where Hoda is now, I would probably do the same thing because she has two little kids,” Roker said, joking that he’s “on the other end. I have one foot in the grave.”

The weatherman confirmed that he has “no plans” to leave the Today show any time soon as he is still having “a great time.” He spoke to USA TODAY at a book signing during a Good Housekeeping event celebrating the 115th anniversary of its legendary seal of approval.

The “Today” host co-wrote the new cookbook “Al Roker’s Recipes to Live By” (Legacy Lit, p. 256, out Oct. 15) with his daughter Courtney Roker Laga, a professional chef, and it was a Family matter more than a possibility. The book contains recipes from the Roker family kitchen, including dishes that his mother used to prepare. But because many of the recipes were never written down, Roker says his daughter acted like a “recipe detective,” interviewing family members to piece together the exact ingredients—all while pregnant.

“Okay, you give birth to a book and a baby,” he joked. “Wow. A little high-flyer.”

Roker, who emphasized that he is “not a chef” like his daughter, was so impressed with her cooking skills as he was putting together the book that a “Star Wars” quote came to mind. “The student has become the master,” he said, referring to Darth Vader.

Last July, Roker became a grandfather for the first time when his daughter Courtney gave birth to a baby girl with her husband Wes. More than a year later, he tells USA TODAY that being a grandpa was “crazy” and that it filled him with “euphoria.”

Al Roker says his family shielded him from learning how “serious” his health problems were

“I was one of those people where friends or work colleagues would come over and talk about their grandchildren and show pictures and I’d think, ‘Blah, blah, blah. Nobody’s kid is that great,'” he joked. “I’m that guy now. And you know what? I don’t care! I’m going to bore you, and I’m going to pull out the pictures, and I’m going to tell you every incredible thing she’s done in the last week.”

“You meet this little person and you immediately fall in love,” he continued. “This has happened with each of my children, but even more so with your grandchild, at least with me. It’s like, ‘Oh my God. Where have you been all my life?’ Someone told me, “If I had known they were so great, I would have had them first.” And it’s true.

It has been almost two years since Roker experienced a major health crisis when he was hospitalized with blood clots and bleeding ulcers in late 2022. He said he’s “doing well” these days and feels “very blessed.” The experience changed his perspective on things and gave him a greater appreciation for the “grace and kindness of strangers.”

Roker didn’t look too far into the future and was excited about the upcoming Halloween episode of the “Today” show. “I still don’t know what we’re doing,” he said. “I’m sure someone told me that, but that’s the great thing about being 70: Everything is new.”
