Airline apologizes for showing film that featured nudity throughout plane

An Australian airline has apologized for a technical issue on a recent flight from Sydney to Japan that resulted in more than half an hour of a film containing graphic nudity being played throughout the plane.

Passengers on the Qantas Airlines flight were shown what one passenger described as “40 minutes of penises and breasts,” according to The Guardian. That wasn’t the actual title of the film, but simply a description from a passenger who had seen the part of the film shown.

The film was a 2023 offering from Dakota Johnson. It is an R-rated film titled Daddio, which reportedly features “an erect penis, prolonged sexting exchanges, and frequent use of the word f*ck.” Don’t worry, Qantas is investigating the matter.

“The film was clearly not suitable to play the entire flight and we sincerely apologize to our customers for this experience,” an airline spokesperson told The Guardian.

“For the remainder of the flight, all screens were switched to a family-friendly film, which is our standard practice for the rare occasions when individual film selection is not possible.”

The spokesperson added: “We are reviewing how the film was selected.”

Passengers on the Qantas Airlines flight were confused by the choice of film due to its graphic nudity

Other passengers who were said to have been on the flight commented on what had become their unforgettable flying experience. One wrote: “Those poor kids and their parents because you should have heard the audible gasps throughout the plane.”

Another added a slightly more eloquent response than the movie “Penis and Boobs”: “(The movie) starred Dakota Johnson and I really thought they were playing Madame Web.” or something – I honestly don’t know if that would have been worse.”

Unfortunately I haven’t seen either film. So I can’t be absolutely sure here, but I’ll go out on a limb and say that it’s mostly due to the lack of coverage of sexting and the appearance of a penis Madam Webthat it would have been a slightly better option.

Not to mention what another passenger said. This person reported that the screens were locked and passengers were unable to turn off the movie.

If you’re stuck watching a movie on a plane, Dakota Johnson’s PG-13 film is a much safer choice. That doesn’t mean the film will be good, but the chances of kids catching a glimpse or two of graphic nudity will be significantly lower.
