UNITED STATES AIR FORCE ACADEMY – Members of the United States Air Force Academy are mourning the death of a cadet Thursday, according to the academy.

Details are not yet available as the death is still under investigation, but the academy said in a press release Thursday morning that 19-year-old Cadet 4th Class Avery Koonce was found unconscious and pronounced dead after life-saving measures were administered.

Koonce was a member of the Falcon Track and Field team and was a freshman in the Class of 2028. He is from Taylor, Texas.

“We lost an incredible teammate last night – although she was with us for a short time, Avery made a positive impact on her unit, her intercollegiate team and her class – her loss will be felt throughout USAFA,” said Lt Gen Tony Bauernfeind, U.S. Air Force Academy superintendent. “Our team is focused on supporting Avery’s family, Cadet Squadron 38, the track and field team and the entire Academy family.”

The academy says it provides support services such as chaplains, psychologists, leaders and other resources for cadets, faculty and staff.
