After the assassination attempt on Trump, Secret Service employees are entrusted with administrative tasks

CNN

Several Secret Service employees at the Pittsburgh field office and a member of Donald Trump’s security staff who were involved in preparing for Trump’s July 13 rally have been assigned administrative duties and ordered to work from home, a source familiar with the matter told CNN.

The move came as the Secret Service continues to face criticism for the security lapses that allowed a gunman to fire eight shots at the former president, pierce Trump’s ear and kill a rally attendee in Butler, Pennsylvania.

The Secret Service is under enormous pressure from lawmakers to discipline or fire those involved in preparing for the rally. Deputy Director Ronald Rowe had told lawmakers he would wait to take disciplinary action until the investigation was complete.

The agency is currently the subject of numerous investigations, including an internal review, congressional investigations and the convening of an independent commission by the Department of Homeland Security.

“This was a failure of the Secret Service,” Rowe told reporters during a press conference earlier this month – a marked change in tone from when the agency previously blamed locals for not paying attention to potential Trump assassin Thomas Crooks that day. “The roof should have been taken off.”

“The U.S. Secret Service is committed to investigating the decisions and actions of personnel related to the event in Butler, Pennsylvania, and the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump. The U.S. Secret Service’s mission security review is progressing and we are examining the processes, procedures, and factors that led to this operational failure,” Anthony Guglielmi, U.S. Secret Service communications director, said in a statement on Friday.

“The U.S. Secret Service requires our personnel to uphold the highest professional standards, and any identified and proven violations of policy will be investigated by the Office of Professional Responsibility and may result in disciplinary action. Because this is a personnel matter, we are unable to comment further,” he added.

CNN’s Zachary Cohen contributed to this report.
