Actor who played “Gidget” surfer Vic Fontaine in “Star Trek” has died at the age of 88

James Darren, a former teen star and pop singer known for his roles in films and TV series such as “Gidget,” “Star Trek” and “TJ Hooker,” died on Monday, September 2, The Hollywood Reporter reported. He was 88 years old.

Darren died in his sleep at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California, his son Jim Moret told the outlet.

Darren went to the hospital to have his aortic valve replaced but was deemed too weak for the surgery, the Hollywood Reporter reported.

“He was a good man. He was very talented,” Moret said, according to Variety. “He was eternally young.”

Darren first rose to fame in 1959 as surfer Moondoggie in the teen film “Gidget,” which also starred Sandra Dee and Cliff Robertson. Darren also sang the theme song for the Malibu-set film and appeared in sequels such as “Gidget Goes Hawaiian” and “Gidget Goes to Rome.”

Darren was a series regular on TJ Hooker, playing Officer Jim Corrigan in the 1980s television series alongside William Shatner and Heather Locklear. In later years, he memorably played Vic Fontaine, a holographic lounge singer in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

His other notable roles include The Guns of Navarone, Venus in Fur, The Gene Krupa Story, The Love Boat, Fantasy Island, Melrose Place, All the Young Men, Beverly Hills, 90210 and Because They’re Young.

Darren was also known as a singer, releasing more than a dozen albums and receiving a gold record in the 1960s with “Goodbye Cruel World.” He also sang in many of his acting roles, singing classics such as “Come Fly With Me” and “Let’s Fall in Love.”

Darren leaves behind, among other relatives, his wife, sons and five grandchildren.
